Things to do this summer holidays with children

With school out for six weeks, a perennial challenge for parents is keeping the kids entertained. So whether you’ll be at home this summer or getting out and about as much as possible, here are some ideas for things you can do with the children.

Visit the theatre

This summer is the perfect time to introduce your child to the magic of the theatre. With performances back after the pandemic, there are plenty of opportunities to see family shows in London, which are specially designed for kids. The Tiger Who Came to Tea is one such example, a show that lasts 55 minutes with no interval, and is aimed at children from age three. Packed with sing along songs, clumsy chaos and more, it’s one of the best kids’ theatre shows in London. Book your tickets today!

Take to the water

Whether you’re visiting London for the day or staying local, getting out on the water always makes a nice change. River cruises are an excellent way of learning more about your town or city, while kayaking gives you the chance to enjoy the sights while getting some exercise. Punts are also great fun, and a leisurely way to enjoy the water. Don’t forget to pop lifejackets on and put your valuables into a waterproof bag!

Go on a scavenger hunt

Kids love a scavenger hunt, and summer is a great time to be out and about finding all sorts of treasures. You can either create a route and hide items along the way, giving your kids clues at each stop, or find a ready-made hunt online. The beauty of a scavenger hunt is that it can be done anywhere – create a nature one to do at the local park, or a sightseeing one exploring London or another city for the first time.

Visit a market

Markets are full of exciting items and interesting people, and a fun morning can be spent browsing the stalls and sampling local produce. Discover the vintage clothes, children’s toys, and home wares at Old Spitalfields Market, or try out some of the delicious pastries, cheeses and international street foods at Borough Market. If you’re outside London, head to a local farmer’s market to try home grown produce and locally made fare.

Attend an event

Summer is the season of festivals and free family events, and there’s plenty to enjoy wherever you are. In London you can visit Canary Wharf to see the summer lights dotted about, all celebrating the long summer days, or let the kids try out their circus skills at the free workshops in Stonebridge Gardens. The Royal Docks, meanwhile, have dock swimming, sandpits and more until 21 August. Elsewhere, investigate the local music festivals, military shows and food festivals for a fun day out.

Whether you’re planning to attend some shows for kids, try a new activity or explore further afield this summer, you’re sure to make some great memories together.
